Description

This is a professional contracted position responsible for the day-to-day operations and implementation of the skills laboratory and simulation environments within the Department of Nursing & Health Sciences. The administration of the learning process (teaching) is to be accomplished in accordance with Federal regulation, Florida State Law, and Florida Gateway College Board Policies. The primary responsibility of the Skills Lab/Simulation Instructor at FGC is to the students in the skills/simulation laboratories. All other activities must be considered secondary in importance. The Instructor is expected to allocate time in a manner as to provide scheduled skills and simulation hours and office hours during which the students may have access to the Instructor.

Examples of Duties

  • Implements policies and procedures for skills laboratory and simulation.
  • Prepares skills laboratory and simulation rooms in preparation for practice, skills check offs and simulation scenarios.
  • Engages in skills practice, check offs and simulation scenarios based on curricular content and level.
  • Uses best practice strategies for debriefing and evaluation of students’ learning from simulation scenarios.
  • Assists with keeping skills laboratory and simulation area clean, safe and with enough, relevant supplies and equipment to enhance students’ learning.
  • Utilizes the nursing process and clinical judgment while teaching nursing skills and conducting simulation scenarios.
  • Maintains a professional work environment and maintains proper functioning equipment.
  • Participates in orientation of new students in skills laboratory and simulation environment.
  • Engages in professional development activities to promote use of effective teaching/learning pedagogy in skills laboratory and simulation scenarios.
  • Uses appropriate and current technology in the teaching-learning process.
  • Maintains polices, standards and practices based on occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Assists with scheduling of skills laboratory and simulation for relevant nursing courses including skills lab testing, retesting.
  • Assists students to achieve proficiency in performance in their nursing skills
  • Supervises skills lab practice times for students.
  • Uses assessment strategies (traditional and alternate) to assist the continuous development of the learner.
  • Uses effective communication techniques with students and all other stakeholders. Engages in continuous professional quality improvement for self and school.
  • Uses appropriate techniques and strategies, which promote and enhance critical, creative, and evaluative thinking capabilities of students.
  • Works closely with each “at risk” student who is unsuccessful with their first skills test attempt and reports progress to relevant program coordinator and faculty.
  • Uses teaching and learning strategies that reflect each student’s culture, learning styles, special needs, and socioeconomic background.
  • Promotes learning in non-threatening skills lab/simulation environment.
  • Works as a team player and promotes team cohesion for students’ success.
  • Adheres to Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct of the Education Profession in Florida.
  • Uses an understanding of learning and human development to provide a positive learning environment, which supports the intellectual, personal, and social development of all students. Demonstrates knowledge and understandings of the subject matter.
  • Creates and maintains positive learning environments in which students are actively engaged in learning, social interaction, cooperative learning and self-motivation.
  • Works with various educational professionals and other stakeholders in the continuous improvement of the educational experiences of students.
  • Uses appropriate technology in the teaching and learning process.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: 

Knowledge of statistical concepts. Knowledge of state laws affecting nursing and health sciences program operations. Ability in numerical reasoning and verbal expression. Ability in written communication. Ability to present information in a coherent manner and the ability to fairly evaluate student retention of that information. Computer literate, knowledge of lab safety and disposal of hazardous materials.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Florida. Holds a Master’s degree in nursing. Florida statues 64B9-2.005. One (1) year of teaching in academic or healthcare settings and (3) years in clinical nursing. At least six (6) months experience in simulation and/or skills lab teaching is preferred.
